Hugo’s birth has made history in the United Kingdom. He is the first baby born following a uterus transplant from a deceased donor, an advance that opens new possibilities for women without a functional uterus. His arrival symbolizes hope, science, and the transformative power of donation.

An Unprecedented Medical Milestone in the United Kingdom

Baby Hugo is only a few months old, yet he is already part of a historic moment in medicine. His mother, Grace Bell, was born without a uterus due to Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, a rare genetic condition in which the uterus and the upper part of the vagina do not fully develop.

MRKH is usually detected during adolescence, when menstruation does not begin at the expected time. Although there are different types and in some cases other organs may be affected, all patients share one reality: the absence of a functional uterus, which makes pregnancy impossible.

Thanks to a uterus transplant from a deceased donor, Grace was able to carry her son. The implantation surgery, performed once the uterus was prepared, lasted nearly seven hours. She later underwent a process of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer. The pregnancy was closely monitored by the medical team.

Hugo was delivered by cesarean section in December, becoming the first baby in the United Kingdom born after this type of transplant and, likely, only the third in Europe. His birth represents the result of years of research and marks a turning point in reproductive medicine.

The Evolution of Uterus Transplants Worldwide

Uterus transplants are a relatively recent technique, but over the past decade they have shown significant progress. The first successful birth following this procedure took place in 2014, opening the door to new possibilities for women with uterine infertility.

In 2015, a particularly symbolic case was recorded: a baby was born from the same uterus that had once carried his own mother, after the grandmother donated it to her daughter, who had lost it due to cancer. In 2018, the first birth following a transplant of a uterus from a deceased donor was announced.

In the United Kingdom, the first birth after a living-donor transplant occurred in April 2025. However, Hugo’s case is different, as the uterus came from a deceased donor as part of a research program funded by the charity Womb Transplant UK.

This program includes a total of ten transplants from deceased donors. The procedure remains experimental and is not part of the standard organ donation process, requiring special authorization from donors’ families.

Donation, Research, and a Legacy That Transcends Life

Grace Bell expressed profound gratitude to her donor and her family, emphasizing that their generosity made it possible for her to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a mother. She hopes that, in the future, this option will become more accessible to other women.

The donor’s parents also shared their testimony, stating that they feel immensely proud of the legacy of compassion, courage, and love their daughter left behind after her passing. They encouraged other families to consider organ donation, highlighting the life-changing impact it can have.

The project is led by Professor Richard Smith, founder of Womb Transplant UK, who celebrated the birth as the culmination of many years of research. Hugo was given the middle name Richard in his honor.

The team at Queen Charlotte and Chelsea Hospital, along with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, was also recognized for their key role in this scientific and human achievement.

Hugo’s case demonstrates that science and solidarity can transform realities that once seemed impossible. This medical breakthrough not only changes one family’s story, but also opens the door to new opportunities for women with uterine infertility in the future.
