Dropped Bioengineering PhD, Now Teaches STEM on OF

Sometimes, the best knowledge comes from unexpected places… like OF. Zara Darcy, a 25-year-old platform model pursuing a bioengineering PhD, quit to share knowledge with far more people—earning over $1 million.

From PhD Track to OF

Abandonó su Doctorado en bioingeniería y ahora da clases STEM en OF

For two years, Zara Darcy pursued a bioengineering PhD. But academia fell short: less hands-on work, more student oversight, funding, and bureaucracy.

“I realized even post-PhD, I’d likely face the same as with my master’s: overqualified but industry-inexperienced,” she told People magazine.

Facing that outlook, Darcy quit her PhD, kept her master’s, and pivoted to self-employment. She created online STEM content (science, tech, engineering, math), blending science outreach with a unique style that quickly gained traction.

Her strategy solidified in 2022 with two OF profiles: one for free science/math lessons, another for adult content she calls “artistic and personal.” For Darcy, both complement each other:
“I like thinking of each set as a reflection of who I am and the message I want to share then.”

Blending Science and Sensuality

Darcy’s success secret: balancing knowledge and entertainment. Her free OF/Instagram lessons bear a signature: bold flair breaking traditional teaching stereotypes. “I present them accessibly and fun, mixing education with a spicy touch,” she says.

Topics range from physics like the Leidenfrost effect or Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment to personal growth reflections. The difference: humor, relatability, and disruptive aesthetics.

Impact was instant. Three months on the platform, she’d earned over $50,000. Her PhD-quitting story went viral—a video hit 1.9 million Instagram views, netting $40,000 in 24 hours, topping her full grad student annual income.

Darcy tested other platforms. On “orange YouTube” as a trial, she earned nearly triple YouTube for identical content. This versatility solidified her as a digital creator expanding reach.

New Path for Education and Independence

Darcy’s shift drew family criticism/doubts initially. Parents worried about her future/safety. Seeing achievements and structured plan, they accepted. “Ultimately, they just want me happy and safe,” she says.

Now in OF’s top 0.1%, Darcy amassed over $1 million. Financial freedom lets her invest in self, family, future projects.

Beyond money, her mission: democratize knowledge. “Knowledge should be accessible regardless of finances. That’s why I create free online courses,” she explains.

Universities hold value but limits: low pay, bureaucracy, undervalued teaching. Her platform offers full control over time, content, message.

Though no role model, she hopes inspiring women in male-dominated fields. “I want them seeing risk-taking, opinion-changing, and success on your terms—not others’ expectations,” she concludes.

Proof superficial OF enables bigger things? Unknown. Criticizable or against many morals/ethics, Zara Darcy at least tries something different—and crucially, educational.
