A medical team from the Dr. Luis Razetti University Hospital, in Barcelona, Anzoátegui state, Venezuela, performed a complex surgical intervention to remove a giant tumor weighing over 25 kilos from a 52-year-old woman. The patient had been living with the ovarian tumor diagnosis for more than seven years.
Successful Surgery to Remove a Tumor Over 25 Kilos

The operation was performed by specialists from the Dr. Luis Razetti University Hospital and lasted approximately one hour. According to the report disseminated by journalist Vivian Ariza for Diario El Tigrense, the patient is a resident of Sotillo municipality and had been diagnosed more than seven years ago with a tumor in her right ovary.
The procedure was led by the hospital’s director, Yajaira Venales, along with the medical center’s deputy director, Dr. Yinny Cayamo. Residents of the general surgery postgraduate program also participated, as well as anesthesiologists Jesús Caraballo and Antonio Villarroel.
According to Venales, the tumor reached a weight of 25 kilos and 500 grams and had a circumference of 116 centimeters, dimensions that classify it as a giant tumor. Despite the complexity of the case, the surgery was performed without serious complications.
The doctors indicated that the procedure was carried out in a clean and controlled manner, without significant blood loss during the intervention. After tumor extraction, the specialists performed a salpingo-oophorectomy, which consists of removing the right ovary and fallopian tube. Subsequently, a total abdominal hysterectomy was also performed to ensure complete resolution of the medical problem.
The patient is currently in the recovery phase under medical supervision while her progress is evaluated before hospital discharge.
The Second Giant Tumor Treated at the Hospital

The medical center’s director highlighted that this case represents the second giant tumor that the Razetti Hospital surgical team has successfully removed in recent years.
The previous year, specialists from the same hospital performed a similar intervention in which they removed a tumor weighing approximately 20 kilograms, demonstrating the accumulated experience of the team in high-complexity procedures.
Giant ovarian tumors usually develop progressively over years and, in many cases, can remain untreated due to difficulties accessing specialized medical care or the silent evolution of the disease.
The timely extraction of this type of mass is fundamental to prevent serious complications, as their growth can affect nearby organs, cause intense pain, digestive or respiratory problems, and even jeopardize the patient’s life.
The successful surgery performed at Razetti Hospital demonstrates the medical staff’s ability to tackle complex cases and improve patients’ quality of life. The recovery of the operated woman will mark the closure of a medical process that lasted more than seven years.
