UA recent video captured by the marine research organization OceanX has shocked the world by revealing images of a six-gilled prehistoric creature in its natural habitat. This shark, which predates the dinosaurs, looks like something out of a science fiction movie, and its appearance has sparked both awe and unease. The discovery highlights the vast mysteries still hidden in the depths of our oceans.
The Deep-Sea “Sea Monster”

During an expedition near the Bahamas, the OceanX team, in collaboration with the Cape Eleuthera Institute, managed to film a bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus)—a creature that rarely comes into contact with humans. Emerging from the murky waters, the animal displayed a size that exceeded the team’s expectations.
Described by researchers as a “monstrous creature,” the shark measured over 6 meters in length and was estimated to weigh more than 1,000 kilograms, making it one of the largest deep-sea predators known. Its presence in front of the submersible emphasized the scale and majesty of this apex predator, which has existed for more than 200 million years—long before dinosaurs ever walked the Earth.
The team successfully tagged the animal with a satellite device, a major step forward in studying the movement patterns and behaviors of this elusive species. According to OceanX, the research aims to better understand deep-sea ecosystems, where the sixgill shark plays a vital role as a dominant predator.
A Prehistoric Predator

The sixgill shark is a living relic from the prehistoric era. Its lineage dates back over 200 million years, making it one of the oldest and most fascinating inhabitants of the ocean. These sharks thrive in the deep sea, reaching depths of up to 2,500 meters, where light barely penetrates and the conditions are extreme.
Despite its intimidating appearance, this predator feeds mainly on fish, squid, and other marine creatures that share its habitat. However, its eye—with an unsettling resemblance to the human eye—left a lasting impression on viewers. One observer commented: “That eye, so similar to a human’s, gives me chills. It feels like it’s staring right at me.”
The specimen captured on video stood out due to its size and imposing behavior, suggesting it may be one of the largest individuals of its species ever recorded.
User Reactions

The footage of this shark sparked widespread discussion on social media. Many compared it to creatures from science fiction films, while others reflected on the vast unknowns of the ocean. “We’ve explored only 5% of the world’s oceans. Who knows what else might be hiding down there?” one user noted.
Other viewers highlighted the mix of fear and fascination that this creature inspires. One humorous comment read: “It’s all fun and games until something bigger eats that shark.”
Beyond the visual spectacle, this encounter illustrates how little we truly know about deep-sea life. The oceans host rich and complex ecosystems, but most remain unexplored due to technological and logistical challenges.
The sighting of this creature reminds us that Earth’s oceans still hold secrets waiting to be discovered. This prehistoric shark—with its commanding presence and fascinating evolutionary history—shows us just how little we understand about the depths of the sea.
