Ho Van Thanh, a North Vietnamese soldier, lost his wife and two sons in a U.S. bombing. Overwhelmed by tragedy, he fled deep into Quang Ngai province jungle with infant son Ho Van Lang. There, they vanished from the world.

Lang was just two years old when his feral life began. Father and son built treetop homes, hunted wild animals, foraged fruit, used leaves/bark for clothes. Believing war continued, they never sought return.

Over 40 years, Lang had zero human contact. He learned survival without electricity, tech, or full language development. He’d never seen a woman or heard of cars, phones, electricity.

His life was a time capsule, frozen by father’s fear/protection instinct. Everything changed in 2013.

Unexpected Return: Clash with Modern World

In 2013, local farmers accidentally found Lang and father gathering firewood. After weeks’ dialogue/negotiation, they convinced them to leave. Vietnam’s “Tarzan” story went viral.

At 44, Lang spoke few words, knew no modern basics. War-traumatized father resisted contact. Both moved to extended family village.

Return wasn’t easy. Lang experienced unthinkable jungle comforts: bed sleeping, processed foods, normal clothes. Amiable/curious yet disoriented. Explorer friend Álvaro Cerezo, aiding adaptation, said Lang deeply missed jungle peace. He’d silently gaze at forest from windows.

Health declined. Sedentary, weight gain, exposed to alcohol/refined sugar—alien to prior life.
