Diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a chronic liver disease, Gareth struggled for years until, after seven months waiting for a donor, he finally received the organ that saved his life.

Through before‑and‑after photos of his transplant, Gareth shows not only the severity of his condition but also the remarkable change he experienced thanks to the procedure. His story is not only a celebration of modern medicine but also a call to the importance of organ donation.

The path to diagnosis

In 2016, Gareth began to notice unusual symptoms. Despite feeling exhausted all the time, he attributed it to being a new father. “Even if I slept well, I was always tired,” he explained. However, the symptoms worsened, and Gareth began to experience jaundice (yellow skin), stomach cramps, and pain in his lower back. Doctors initially told him that his liver function was “slightly altered,” and an ultrasound revealed small gallstones that needed to be removed.

What Gareth did not expect was the diagnosis that followed. Further tests revealed that he was suffering from primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a chronic disease that affects the bile ducts, causing inflammation, scarring, and eventually blockages.

As bile built up in his liver, the damage became more evident. Gareth recalled the impact of the diagnosis:

“The surgeon told me not to look up information about the disease on the internet, but of course I did. I discovered that PSC puts you at high risk of developing cancer, with a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years, and that only a liver transplant could cure it.”

The wait for the donor

Despite the severity of the situation, Gareth tried to maintain a positive attitude. Doctors were confident that he did not have liver cancer, but he struggled to see the bright side.

“At that moment I couldn’t think of anything positive. I was 32 years old, with a wife, a baby, and a job I enjoyed. I was trying to come to terms with having a chronic illness.”

Over the years, his health fluctuated. At one point, his bile duct closed completely, and he had to undergo several procedures to place a stent. He also lost 15 pounds and developed sepsis.

Although Gareth tried not to let his illness affect his mindset, he admits the process was even harder for his wife and his daughter, Zara, who were his main source of motivation.

As his condition worsened in 2021, he was finally referred for a liver transplant evaluation in April of that year. In September, he was placed on the transplant waiting list, with a hospital bag ready at his front door. The call that changed his life came on May 16 at 5:59 a.m., informing him that an organ was available.

The before and after of the transplant

Gareth’s before and after is striking. Just five days before the transplant, his skin was visibly yellow due to jaundice, as his liver could not properly filter his blood. However, only six weeks after the operation, in a photo taken in the same place and accompanied by his daughter, Gareth appears with much healthier skin and a smile full of hope. Although he continued taking daily medication and his recovery is not yet complete, his progress has been remarkable.

For the first time in nearly six years, Gareth’s blood tests showed consistent improvements, and all his liver function tests are within the normal range. Although he still does not know the identity of his donor, he expresses deep gratitude to that person and their family.

“Thanks to the generosity of my donor, I am excited about my future again. I want to return to South Africa on vacation, finally use the bike I bought a few years ago, and take up golf again.”

However, his greatest wish is to regain normality in his family life and have the energy to enjoy more activities with his wife and daughter.

“My donor is a true hero,” he stated. This experience has inspired him to share his story to educate others about the importance of organ donation and the transformative impact it can have on people’s lives.

In addition to his gratitude toward his donor, Gareth also thanks the medical team who helped him at every step of the process. “If it weren’t for the team of expert doctors and all the people involved, I wouldn’t be here today,” he acknowledges.

The story of Gareth Weeks is a powerful celebration of life, resilience, and the generosity of organ donors. His transformation, captured in photos taken just six weeks apart, is a visual testimony to the impact a liver transplant can have. Although he still faces challenges on his path to full recovery, Gareth is filled with hope and gratitude for the second chance at life he has received. His story is also a reminder to everyone of the importance of organ donation and the power it has to change lives.

Reference:

PSC Support/Gareth Weeks.
