Initially, the goal was to study how 2\u2011deoxy\u2011D\u2011ribose (2dDR), a natural organic sugar, could aid wound healing. However, scientists noticed a surprising phenomenon: hair around treated wounds grew faster and denser than in untreated areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This unusual growth led to the hypothesis that the sugar might be stimulating nearby hair follicles. They were divided into groups: one control treated only with DHT (dihydrotestosterone), another with minoxidil, one with 2dDR gel, and another with a combination of minoxidil and 2dDR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minoxidil, though FDA\u2011approved and commonly marketed under brands like Rogaine or Theroxidil, has limitations and side effects such as scalp irritation, light sensitivity, and restrictions for people with hypertension. Its effectiveness also decreases at the hairline and in men over 40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 20 days, mice received daily applications of the treatments. At the end, results were remarkable: mice treated with 2dDR\u2011SA gel (a sodium alginate sustained\u2011release formulation) showed hair regrowth comparable to the minoxidil group. Significant increases were observed in blood vessel numbers, follicle density and length, and a higher proportion of hairs in the anagen (active growth) phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Findings suggest 2dDR\u2011SA achieves 80\u201390% of minoxidil\u2019s effectiveness without its adverse effects. Interestingly, combining 2dDR with minoxidil showed no additional benefit, reinforcing the hypothesis that this sugar alone has high potential as a hair treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A natural compound with great therapeutic potential<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.gq.com.mx\/photos\/645d3acf2f52f48c1a2e0862\/16:9\/w_2560%2Cc_limit\/calvicie_masculina_1404205960.jpg\" alt=\"Calvicie masculina: \u00bfQu\u00e9 hacer si comienzas a notar la ca\u00edda del cabello? |  GQ\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The key lies in 2dDR\u2019s ability to stimulate angiogenesis\u2014the formation of new blood vessels\u2014through positive regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which nourishes and activates hair follicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c2dDR is a natural, inexpensive, and stable compound that can be easily applied through gels or dressings,\u201d explained Muhammed Yar, associate professor at COMSATS University. \u201cThis makes it an ideal candidate for future developments in treating male hair loss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers also believe its application could extend beyond androgenic alopecia, with potential use in hair loss caused by chemotherapy or other medical conditions affecting hair health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite progress, scientists emphasize more work is needed to fully understand 2dDR\u2019s mechanism of action. Specifically, studies must explore how VEGF levels vary with its use and how dependent hair growth is on this molecular pathway. It is also necessary to evaluate how VEGF inhibitors might block the sugar\u2019s positive effects on follicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though still in early stages, the discovery of 2\u2011deoxy\u2011D\u2011ribose as a hair growth stimulant opens a new door for millions suffering hair loss.
