In 2015, an unusual error left the domain Google.com available for purchase. A former employee, Sanmay Ved, bought it for just $12, gaining access to one of the most valuable assets in technology. But his reaction surprised even Google’s executives.

The Accidental Purchase of the Most Valuable Domain

In the early hours of September 29, 2015, Sanmay Ved, a former employee of the company, was browsing Google Domains when he noticed something strange: Google.com was available for sale. Intrigued, he decided to test it and added it to his shopping cart.

Against all odds, the transaction went through successfully. His card was charged $12, and he received emails confirming the acquisition. At that moment, Ved was officially the owner of the most valuable domain in the world.

What was most surprising was that, upon acquiring the domain, he also gained access to Google’s internal tools, including data about sites hosted on Google Sites. Although he had the ability to redirect traffic from the world’s largest search engine or even sell the domain for millions, he chose to act ethically.

Knowing the magnitude of the error, he immediately contacted the tech giant’s security team to report what had happened. Just a minute later, Google revoked the purchase and recovered the domain—but what came next was even more unexpected.

Google’s Response and the Unexpected Reward

When Google fixed the problem and regained its domain, it decided to reward Sanmay Ved for acting with integrity. They offered him $6,006.13. Although it might seem like a random figure, it had a special meaning: in leet language, the numbers spelled out “Google,” a characteristic wink from the company.

What no one expected was Ved’s response. Instead of accepting the money, he asked that the reward be donated to the Art of Living India Foundation, a charitable organization that runs more than 1,200 schools in India and is dedicated to providing education to underprivileged children.

Ved’s gesture did not go unnoticed. Impressed by his generosity, the company doubled the donation, significantly increasing the amount allocated to children’s education. Although he sought no personal benefit, his decision inspired the company to contribute even more.

This act of generosity turned what could have been a simple technical error into an inspiring story. Ved held in his hands a mistake that could have made him a millionaire, but he chose to leave a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of children.

A Lesson in Integrity and Generosity

Sanmay Ved held in his hands an error that could have been exploited to gain millions, but he chose to do the right thing.

His story shows that true wealth is not in how much one possesses, but in how much one can share. Even in a world dominated by technology and business, ethics and generosity can make a difference.

What happened with Google’s domain is a reminder that opportunities can appear in unexpected ways. Ved not only showed integrity, but turned a simple mistake into a lesson in generosity and responsibility. Sometimes, the smallest acts can leave a much greater impact than we imagine.
