The point of no return around a black hole is called its \u201cevent horizon,\u201d and while we can\u2019t see anything inside it, we can learn about black holes from what\u2019s around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because matter accelerates and emits energy as it approaches a black hole. This creates a bright ring around the black hole, and because of the way spacetime warps big objects, we see a \u201cshadow\u201d inside the ring that\u2019s about twice the diameter of the black hole itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Size \u2018em up: Researchers estimate that there are 40 billion billion black holes in the Universe, but the ones we\u2019ve detected so far range in size from the relatively small (three times the mass of the sun) up to the super supermassive (tens of billions of solar masses).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help put this into perspective, NASA has created an animation comparing the size of 10 supermassive black holes to our Solar System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"NASA Animation Sizes Up the Biggest Black Holes\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8GnSFAZD8YY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The black holes are arranged by the size of their shadows. The smallest featured black hole lies at the center of the galaxy known as 1601+3113 and has the mass of merely 100,000 Suns. The black hole at the center of our own galaxy, Sagittarius A*, falls in the middle size-wise, with a mass of 4.3 million Suns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The largest black hole in the animation, TON 618, is equal to 60 billion Suns.
