The chamber is considered to be dirty because unclean samples can be tested inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA\u2019s Carbothermal Reduction Demonstration (CaRD) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/nasa-extracts-oxygen-lunar-soil-simulant-first-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">researchers used<\/a> a high-powered laser to simulate heat from a solar energy concentrator and melted the lunar soil simulant within a carbothermal reactor developed by Sierra Space Corp. A carbothermal reactor is where the process of heating and extracting the oxygen takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/oxigeno_lunar_simulacion_kjhb-bell-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"-\" class=\"wp-image-536019\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/oxigeno_lunar_simulacion_kjhb-bell-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/oxigeno_lunar_simulacion_kjhb-bell-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/oxigeno_lunar_simulacion_kjhb-bell-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/oxigeno_lunar_simulacion_kjhb-bell-696x392.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/oxigeno_lunar_simulacion_kjhb-bell-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/oxigeno_lunar_simulacion_kjhb-bell-747x420.jpg 747w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/oxigeno_lunar_simulacion_kjhb-bell-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/oxigeno_lunar_simulacion_kjhb-bell.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Carbothermal reduction has been used for decades on Earth to produce items like solar panels, producing carbon monoxide or dioxide using high temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After heating the soil, they used a device called the Mass Spectrometer Observing Lunar Operations, or MSolo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;This technology has the potential to produce several times its own weight in oxygen per year on the lunar surface, which will enable a sustained human presence and lunar economy,&#8221;<\/em> Aaron Paz, NASA senior engineer and CaRD project manager at Johnson, explained in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply the same process to oxygen production on the moon, a carbothermal reactor has to be able to hold pressure and keep gases from escaping to space, while also allowing lunar material to travel in and out of the reaction zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Operating the reactor in a vacuum environment for the CaRD test simulated the conditions at the lunar surface and increased the technical readiness level of the reactor to a six \u2013 meaning the tech has a fully functional prototype or representational model and is ready to be tested in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mision-artemis-kjhbv.jpg\" alt=\"-\" class=\"wp-image-536022\" width=\"536\" height=\"298\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mision-artemis-kjhbv.jpg 715w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mision-artemis-kjhbv-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mision-artemis-kjhbv-696x386.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mision-artemis-kjhbv-150x83.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Our team proved the CaRD reactor would survive the lunar surface and successfully extract oxygen,&#8221;<\/em> Anastasia Ford, NASA engineer and CaRD test director at Johnson, added. <em>&#8220;This is a big step for developing the architecture to build sustainable human bases on other planets.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same tech that was proved by the CaRD test could be applied to Artemis missions down the road.
