Zooming in, a deep-sea creature comes into focus, the video shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt\u2019s like a squid-y looking thing,\u201d<\/em> one of the scientists said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tentacled animal was identified as a bigfin squid, the organization said on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up close, the bigfin squid has a vibrant pink color that stands out against the deep blue water surrounding it, video footage shows. The squid swims along with gentle flutters of its head fins and swirls of its tentacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bigfin squid (a group of cephalopods in genus Magnapinna) are a rare sight &#8211; there have only been around 20 recorded encounters w\/ them in the 2 decades they&#39;ve been known to science. Scientists have recorded only about 20 encounters with the squid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bigfin squid can be found \u201cthroughout the world\u2019s deep ocean, and they can live deeper than any other known squid,\u201d according to NOAA Ocean Exploration. The squid filmed by Schmidt Ocean researchers was found about 6,315 feet underwater or about 1.2 miles down, the video shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The squid is identified by its \u201ceight arms and two tentacles\u201d which have \u201celbow-like bends,\u201d NOAA said in the article from 2021. Bigfin squid can grow to about 20 feet long \u2013 mostly due to their long arms and tentacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers still don\u2019t know how the elusive squid uses its tentacles, according to NOAA, but they might help the animal capture its prey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After about four minutes, the Schmidt Ocean team left the squid and continued with its exploration, the video shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose of this expedition was to find and study a type of hydrothermal vent known as \u201clost cities\u201d vents, according to Schmidt Ocean\u2019s website.
