{"id":535502,"date":"2023-04-07T23:44:49","date_gmt":"2023-04-08T05:44:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/los-cientificos-encuentran-montanas-estructuras-variables-cerca-del-nucleo-de-la-tierra-eacr\/"},"modified":"2023-04-07T23:51:13","modified_gmt":"2023-04-08T05:51:13","slug":"scientists-find-mountains-variable-structures-near-earths-core-eacr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/en\/scientists-find-mountains-variable-structures-near-earths-core-eacr\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists find \u2018mountains,\u2019 variable structures near Earth\u2019s core"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research, led by The University of Alabama, has revealed a dense layer of ancient ocean floor, or an ultra-low velocity zone (ULVZ), near Earth\u2019s core, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5dc.com\/news\/scientists-find-mountains-variable-structures-earth-core.amp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a new study.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/montayas_nucleo_de_la_Tierra_kjhg-bspline-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"-\" class=\"wp-image-535498\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/montayas_nucleo_de_la_Tierra_kjhg-bspline-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/montayas_nucleo_de_la_Tierra_kjhg-bspline-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/montayas_nucleo_de_la_Tierra_kjhg-bspline-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/montayas_nucleo_de_la_Tierra_kjhg-bspline-696x392.jpg 696w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/montayas_nucleo_de_la_Tierra_kjhg-bspline-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/montayas_nucleo_de_la_Tierra_kjhg-bspline-747x420.jpg 747w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/montayas_nucleo_de_la_Tierra_kjhg-bspline-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cerebrodigital.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/montayas_nucleo_de_la_Tierra_kjhg-bspline.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Earth\u2019s core is too deep to be directly explored, Samantha Hansen, a geophysicist and lead researcher on the project, said the team was able to use instruments to record seismic waves and signals from earthquakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Some of the energy from those earthquakes traveled deep into our planet and reflected (bounced) off the core-mantle boundary (CMB), ultimately getting recorded by our Antarctic stations&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.add4838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data suggests <\/a>this layer of ocean floor may cover the core-mantle boundary.<\/strong> This layer is similar to &#8220;mountains&#8221; \u2013 a reasonable analogy according to Hansen \u2013 due to its variable structure along Earth\u2019s core that is thinner in some places and thicker in others.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;This is similar to a mountain range, where the peaks can have different elevations. And, just like mountains at the surface of the Earth, this structure changes with time&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the presence of these structures along the core is something that has been recognized in previous studies, Hansen said the team was surprised by how &#8220;abundant&#8221; the structures were, finding evidence all over the southern hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Combining the seismic results with the geodynamic modeling took this a step further.\u00a0 The consistency between them makes for a very compelling interpretation&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team is currently working on expanding the Antarctic-based study by examining data from all available seismic networks across the continent. Hansen said they would like to apply other analyses and modeling approaches to further analyze the characteristics of ULVZs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hansen said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I hope that readers take away an appreciation for how complex and fascinating our planet is,&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;There are still many unknowns about the world beneath our feet and even small-scale structures like the ULVZs we\u2019ve imaged can play major roles in how our planet functions.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Research, led by The
