About the tour<\/h2>\n\n

The tour <\/a>begins by entering through a tunnel believed to have been created by thieves in 820 AD. In it, you will visit the King’s chamber at the top of the pyramid, the Queen’s chamber in the middle and a subway chamber of unknown purpose.<\/p>\n\n

The pyramid<\/a> is the largest of the Egyptian pyramids and the tomb of the pharaoh of the fourth dynasty, Khufu.<\/p>\n\n

Khufu began construction of the pyramid, which is the oldest of the seven wonders of the world, around 2550 B.C. Approximately 2.3 million blocks of stone, weighing an average of 2.5 to 15 tons each, were used in its construction. The task of transporting the materials there was difficult, as more than 800 kilometers of granite were imported from Aswan, some 500 miles away.<\/p>\n\n

For years it was thought that the pyramid was built by slaves, but in the 1990s, discoveries at the Khafre and Menkaure pyramids suggested that they were actually built by paid workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

In the cemetery, workers were found in mud brick tombs filled with beer and bread to take with them to the afterlife. Upon examination of their remains, it was discovered that they had a meat-rich diet that would have been enviable for other workers of the time and would not have been possible for slaves.<\/p>\n\n

Subsequent analysis of the workers’ remains<\/a> found that they had received medical treatment, ranging from bone straightening to evidence of brain surgery on a tumor. One worker was found to have had a leg amputated by surgery and had lived another 14 years after the operation.<\/p>\n\n

Thousands of workers moved the blocks staggering distances on oxen and boats, and they could have been pulled on sleds by workers through wet sand, reducing the amount of force needed to move them.<\/p>\n\n
